Delicacies from the Arctic Circle
– Life and experiences in Finnish Lapland
all year round

The life of the fishing couple follows the annual rhythm of two seasons, summer and winter.

From November to April, we provide tailored activities in the Jerisjärvi lake and Levi-Pallas-Ylläs-Olos fell-Lapland area. In summer we fish at Miekojärvi lake on the Arctic Circle in Pello and Ylitornio. We process our catch at the Sirkkakoski fish harbor, where our fish shop also operates during the open-water season from May to October.

Reserve and purchase your fish products directly from the fisherman. And serve authentic flavors from the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lappish at home or to your customers. Or bring your friends, family or partner for an unforgettable visit to experience what the lakes and fells have offer just for you!

Professional fishing – Fish shop at Sirkkakoski harbor

When spring arrives and fish begins to be active, it is time to set the nets in to the lake. The fishing couple moves from the winter home beside the fells to the summer home on the Arctic Circle. The clear waters of Miekojärvi lake provide magnificent surroundings for professional fishing. Throughout the open-water season, we catch Europe´s northernmost pike-perch, as well as perch, pike, burbot, bronze bream and vendace. Roach and ide also become fine culinary delicacies in our hands.

Our fish shop at Sirkkakoski harbor in Miekojärvi serves throughout the open-water season. Please confirm our presence by phone or WhatsApp.

Seine fishing demonstration

Welcome to the seine fishing on the beach. Sit on a wooden bench, admire the shimmering lake surface and take part in the old tradition og hauling the seine ashore. We light a fire as a greeting for Ahti, the god of the waters, and enjoy coffee brewed over an open flame As Jukka´s fisherman father used to say: “You do not take – you are given”. Only when the very end of the seine reaches the shore do we see whether the catch is empty, abundant, or something in between. If we are fortunate, we will give a quick lesson in cleaning vendace. Seine fishing is a centuries-old fishing method. We continue this tradition in the fifth generation and wish to share the philosophy of beach seining with others.

Boat transport on Lake Miekojärvi

If you do not have your own boat to reach the hiking routes and rest areas of Vaarasaari Island, the fishing couple can arrange transportation from the mainland to the island for an daytime or overnight stay at a wilderness shelter. Miekojärvi – the pearl of the Arctic Circle – is a beautiful, pristine natural lake. The lake Miekojärvi is a perfect place not only for fishermen but also for all kinds of waterborne adventures. The magnificent sandy beaches embraced by rocky shores invite boaters, paddlers and stand-up paddleboarders. The fells of Western Lapland frame the open waters. Numerous landing sites and shelters encourage exploration of the lake´s archipelago.

Christmas and New Year season

Visitors to Lapland are moved by meeting Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. The fishing couple assists them in offering experiences rooted in Finnish Christmas traditions. For us, Christmas arrives together with the snow, and festive atmosphere continues throughout the winter until spring.

Shall we serve potatoes
and fish from Miekojärvi?

Fishing couple, the professional fishermen offer pike-perch, pike, burbot, perch, bream and vendace from Miekojärvi, caught using traditional methods with modern equipment and refined by hand.

Miekojärvi, the pearl of the Arctic Circle, serves as our open-air office throughout the open-water season. We fish sustainably for all species the waters provide and refine them with care, utilizing every delicacy. We fish with nets and traps and catch vendace using a beach seine.

Kalastajapariskon kalaherkut.
The fish are processed into fillets and other delicacies in the modern, officially approved facilities at the Sirkkakoski fish harbor in Pello. As catches vary during the summer, we vacuum-pack and quick-freeze our products, guaranteeing freshness for at least one year from our freezer storage.

We have also developed our own artisan preserves – the Fishing Couple’s pike-perch and bream delicacies. These handcrafted canned specialties are seasoned with homemade fish stock and lingonberry jelly prepared from handpicked berries. They are produced by hand in Muonio. Take home a jar of Lapland’s flavors as a gift or treat yourself and create a gourmet sandwich or even a pizza from our artisan preserves.

Our fish from Miekojärvi can be purchased at the fish shop at Sirkkakoski harbor, and also as quick-frozen products from our retailer Pörröporo at the Arctic Circle. And also as artisan preserves from selected stores: in Pello from Kaira Outdoors, in Muonio from K-market and Tunturiporo, in Kittilä from K-supermarket and in Rovaniemi from Samarund.

The Fishing Couple

We are Päivi and Jukka, a couple living our dream life according to the rhythms of nature and its annual cycle. Our home changes with the seasons. During the warmest part of the year, we live in our summer home on Vaarasaari Island at Miekojärvi on the Arctic Circle, in an off-grid cabin, working as professional fishermen. For the long winter, we move farther north to our winter home on the shore of Lake Jerisjärvi near Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park. From there, we introduce travelers to Finnish Christmas traditions and guide them in experiencing the wonders of winter in the fell region of Lapland.

Lapland captivates visitors from across Europe and the world, and we are equally honored to welcome Finnish guests. More and more people are interested about Lapland and it is our privilege to present our beautiful Lapland to both domestic and international visitors.

What gives our life meaning is being part of a chain of generations and traditions. Living in harmony with nature and respecting its gifts is, for us, a way of doing good—for ourselves and for all around us. Through traditions rooted in the past and the everyday life of fishermen in nature, we wish to offer others the chance to live for a moment on nature’s terms—even if only by pausing by the fire to prepare a meal. At the same time, our guests may discover something new not only about northern life and the profession of fishing, but also about themselves.
